In Survey, you can randomise the order of questions, pages, and answer options. This allows you to display questions on the same page in random order, define and randomise page groups, and display answer options in random order.
Randomise questions on a page
1. In the menu, go to "Questions" and "Questionnaire".
2. Put the questions you want to randomise on the same page by drag-and-drop them.
3. Click on the three dots next to the page (). The following screen opens:
4. Select "Show questions in random order" and "Save".
Fixed position
Once questions are displayed in random order, you can click the pin icon to give a question a fixed position. This ensures that the question remains in the same position each time the page is randomised. This functionality is only available when randomising questions within a single page, not when randomising page groups.
Randomising page groups
With page group randomisation, you can define one or more groups of pages that are randomised among each other. Each respondent will see a different order of groups, while the order within a group remains the same.
Setting up page groups
Go to ‘Questions’ and ‘Questionnaire’ in the menu.
Click ‘Randomise pages’ (shuffle icon) or choose ‘Randomise pages’ from the menu.
Click ‘Add group’.
Give the goup a name.
Select the start and end question numbers. This defines the group of pages.
Repeat this if you want to create multiple groups.
Click ‘Save’.
You can remove groups via the Page randomisation page.
What does this mean for respondents?
Fixed order per respondent:
As soon as a respondent starts, one fixed order of groups is assigned. This order remains the same, even if the survey is reloaded or resumed later.
Important to know
Jumps, conditions, and quotas do not work within the randomised group.
Randomisation always works at the page level. If you select a question number that is not exactly at the beginning or end of a page, the group will automatically be adjusted to the actual start or end of that page.
A page can only belong to one randomisation group at a time.
If you later change the order of pages or questions, existing randomisation groups will automatically be disabled and you will receive a notification. You can then reconfigure the groups.
When importing, exporting, or copying a questionnaire, the randomisation is not copied.
Randomise answers
For question types such as the single-response question, you can display answers in random order. When this option is selected, an extra column with a pin icon appears next to the answer options. To keep an answer in the same position, tick the checkbox for that answer option.
